That $12 rain barrel my neighbor insisted on finally paid off

Our neighbor Maria in Portland kept nagging us to get a rain barrel for the garden, said it would save us money and water. I figured it was hippie nonsense, but after 14 months it's collected like 900 gallons and our summer water bill dropped by $38. Plus the tomatoes did way better than the last 3 years. Anyone else have a small eco change that surprised them with actual results?

We had the same eye roll moment when my wife talked me into a compost bin setup last spring. I figured it was just a fancy way to make dirt, but our trash pickup is now half full and I haven't bought a single bag of soil for the raised beds since. The zucchini and peppers are also noticeably bigger this year, which is weird since we didn't change anything else. It's honestly one of those things where you don't realize how much waste and money you're tossing until you actually try it.
