My neighbor in Phoenix planted a lawn I planted gravel, and watching the water bill made me rethink everything | Anthropocene Anxieties - Thought Shares
The part about "watching the water bill" doesn't tell the whole story. Phoenix water is actually pretty cheap, so the bill alone usually isn't what makes people rip out a lawn. What really gets you is the upkeep, like mowing in 110 degree heat and watching half your grass die anyway no matter how much you water it. Gravel is not free either, it costs money up front and you still have to deal with weeds and the heat it throws back at your house. The real thing is the desert does not want a lawn here, and fighting that gets old fast. So yeah, the water bill is a small piece of a bigger change in how people out here think about their yards.
