DAE panic when the cashier asks paper or plastic, knowing one ends up in a landfill either way?
Last Tuesday at the grocery store in Boise I stood there for a full minute while the line grew behind me, because the paper bags come from trees and the plastic ones sit for 500 years, and I still don't know which choice does less harm.
Have you ever actually watched where those bags go after you toss them in the bin at home? Because that was the thing that finally got me thinking straight on this. Most of the "recycled" plastic bags end up at the store drop off bin, and a lot of those still get burned or sent overseas, so it's not like we're really saving them from the trash. Paper breaks down way faster and it can be composted if your city does that, which is a real win in my book. So the question might not be paper vs plastic at all. It might be why the store won't just let you bring your own box or bag without acting like you're committing a crime.
