Found a fan sub of my favorite show that fixed all the translation gripes I had

So last week I was rewatching this older mecha series from the 90s and the official subs kept driving me nuts. Every time a character would explain the tech or make a joke, the translation felt flat or just wrong. I finally got fed up and googled around for an alternate version, found this fan sub group that had been working on it for like 3 years. Their version filled in all the cultural context and even kept the honorifics which I usually hate but it worked there. It was like watching a completely different show, the emotional scenes hit way harder. Now I'm second guessing every official release I've ever seen. Anyone else ever switched to a fan sub and never looked back, or am I just overthinking translations in general?
