Tried the "no Rome" thing in my homebrew campaign and my players revolted in the worst way
So last weekend I ran a one shot for my group where the big twist was that Rome never fell. I spent like 12 hours building this whole world where Latin is still the trade language and there are aqueducts running through downtown Chicago. I was super proud of it. My players spent the first hour just asking why their characters still had smartphones if the timeline split in 476 AD. I tried to explain that tech still moved forward but they kept poking holes in the logic. Then my buddy Dave says "so we're just playing regular history but with togas" and everyone laughed for 10 minutes. By the end they voted to scrap it and go back to our normal campaign. I guess the lesson is that a cool concept means nothing if you can't answer basic questions about how people live day to day. Anyone else had a worldbuilding idea that sounded amazing in your head but fell apart the second other people looked at it?
Wait, they had smartphones in your Rome never fell world? That's the part that gets me, like how does that even track with aqueducts and Latin? Dave's burn was brutal but honestly if you can't explain the phones you're kinda sunk from the start.
