Just realized my $50 investment in a good old fashioned landline saved me during a blackout

I'm a bit of a tech nerd, but last month a storm knocked out power in my area for almost 3 days. My cell phone died after the first 12 hours and I couldn't charge it. I had this old corded landline phone I got at a garage sale for $5 and I pay $10 a month for basic phone service. It still worked perfectly even with no electricity. I could call my boss to say I'd be late and check on my elderly neighbor. It made me think about a world where the internet never took off and we all still relied on simple copper wires. Has anyone else kept a landline for emergencies or am I just being paranoid?

People forget how much we rely on things that need power until the power's gone.

People forget how much we rely on things that need power." Yeah, until your phone hits 5% and you're stuck in the dark. That's the moment you realize how fragile all of it really is.
