A history prof in Savannah bet me $20 the Roman Empire never really fell, and I lost
I was at a bar near Forsyth Park last month and got to chatting with this older guy who teaches history at a college there. When I joked that the Roman Empire fell in 476 AD like everyone learns, he pulled out a receipt and wrote "surviving
end quote" on it and slid it over. He went on for like 20 minutes about how the eastern half kept going till 1453, and honestly by the end I handed him the $20 just for the free lecture. Now I'm down a rabbit hole and can't decide if "the empire never fell, it just changed shape" is genius or a cop out. How do you all draw the line on when a civilization actually counts as fallen?
