The backup battery spec sheet lied to me

I always swapped backup batteries based on the five year mark, trust the label. Last month in Austin I had a panel fail after only three years, and the battery tested at 40 percent capacity. Wrote to the manufacturer, they said the five year rating assumes 77 degrees and clean power, which nobody has in a hot garage. Now I test every battery with a load meter during annual service, costs me 10 extra minutes per stop but saves callbacks. Has anyone else seen early failure from heat or flaky utility power, or am I the only one who trusted the sticker?.
