Vent: my local Whisper setup beat the paid cloud API for transcribing 6 hours of interviews
I had 6 hours of recorded interviews from a project in Tucson to type up in March, so I tried two things side by side: a paid speech-to-text API and a free model running on my own laptop. Everyone said the cloud one would win easy, but it kept mangling names and dropping whole words every time two people talked at once. The local setup (I ran it on my old gaming PC) took way longer but got almost every word right, even the mumbly parts. Here is the part that really got me: when I fed both versions the same 14 minute clip and checked them line by line, the cloud version was wrong on 11 spots and the local one on 2. I expected the fancy paid service to crush my little home setup, and it just didn't. I think the cloud tools are built for quick one person voice memos, not messy real talk with crosstalk and background noise. So now I'm stuck wondering if I should just keep grinding audio on my own machine and save the money. Has anybody else tried this side by side and seen the opposite?
