Picked a local AI transcription tool over the big cloud one for my mom's doctor visits, and it's going way better than I expected
So my mom has memory issues and I was driving her to appointments in Denver every other week, and I kept forgetting half of what the doctor said by the time we got to the car. I had two choices: one of those big cloud transcription apps that uploads everything to a server, or a small offline tool that runs right on my laptop and never touches the internet. I went with the offline one even though it cost $40 more and the setup took me almost an hour of downloading model files. The first visit I recorded, it missed a couple of drug names and wrote "mercy" instead of "metformin," which was funny but also a little scary. After I fed it a list of her meds, it got way better, and now I have a full text of every appointment that I can search in seconds. The cloud one probably would have been smarter right out of the box, but I don't love the idea of her health info sitting on some company's servers. Has anyone here run a local model long enough to say if it keeps improving, or does it sort of plateau after a while?
Man, the metformin to mercy mixup gave me a pit in my stomach just reading it, so good on you for catching it before it mattered. My dad had strokes and I was the one in those rooms writing stuff down on the back of receipts, so I know that feeling of walking to the car and realizing you lost half the visit. The local model thing makes sense too. I would not want my mom's whole medical history sitting on somebody else's computer either. From what I have seen with these tools, they stop getting smarter on their own but they get a lot better every time you feed them your own stuff, so the med list you gave it is doing most of the work.
