My work laptop bricked itself right before a 9am client demo

Last Tuesday I had this huge demo for a client in Austin, the one I've been prepping for like 3 weeks. At 8:40am the thing just goes black, fan spins super loud, then nothing. I tried the reset button, unplugged the battery, even did the 30 second hold thing. Nothing. I ended up pulling up the slides on my phone and winging the whole presentation over speaker, which went surprisingly okay but I nearly had a panic attack. Has anyone else had a machine die at the absolute worst moment, and did you find a way to backup everything more often without it being a huge hassle?
