I finally went back to my old treehouse spot and the oak tree is gone, replaced by a parking lot
Drove through my hometown of Lebanon, Ohio last weekend for the first time in about 8 years and stopped by the field behind my old neighborhood where me and my buddies built a treehouse in a huge oak back in 2007. The whole field is paved now, just a CVS parking lot, and I sat in my car for like 20 minutes trying to remember which exact spot the tree was in. What got me was the noise, crickets used to be so loud out there you couldn't hear each other talk, and now it's just cars and the hum of the CVS sign. Funny how you carry a place in your head for years and then one day there's just nothing left of it. Has anyone else gone back somewhere like that and found it totally wiped out?
Went through the same thing with a creek near my grandma's house where we used to catch crawdads every summer. They put up a chain link fence and a drainage pipe and that was that. The weird part was I could still hear the water in my head even standing there looking at concrete. I ended up just sitting on the curb for a while letting myself be sad about it instead of trying to talk myself out of it. It helped to write down what I remembered, like the smell of the mud and where the big flat rock was, so at least it lives somewhere besides my head. Sorry about your tree, man.
You know what's funny, they probably paid some guy good money to turn a creek into the world's saddest parking lot. @ellis.faith at least you got the crawdad memories, the drainage pipe is not winning any awards. Sitting on the curb sounds about right, sometimes you just gotta let it sting for a bit.
