Update: My friend's vinegar finish hack is a disaster waiting to happen

My friend swears by her vinegar and steel wool trick for aging wood. It just strips the surface and leaves a nasty residue. Am I wrong to call her out when she posts it online?

My garage project turned gray and sticky with that vinegar trick. Avery_ross is right about wiping it down, but the acid can still eat through soft woods. I'd suggest testing on scrap wood first before posting tips online.

My cousin tried that exact method on an oak table last year. It left dark streaks that looked like water damage, not a nice aged patina. The problem is vinegar reacts differently with every type of wood and even different batches of steel wool. Calling it a universal hack sets people up to ruin good projects. She might get lucky on one piece of pine, but telling everyone it works is just bad advice.

See, that method works fine if you do it right. People mess up by using the wrong kind of steel wool and not wiping it down after. It doesn't always turn into a disaster lol.

Wow, @avery_ross must be using magic vinegar. Mine just makes the wood look sad and dirty.
