Lost three shoes on a single trail ride last Tuesday in Bend

I had a gelding pop off both fronts and a hind between mile 2 and mile 4 on a fairly tame loop. Tracked back to find one shoe bent sideways in the gravel and the other two just gone. Anyone else seen a horse shed that many shoes that fast on dry ground?

Three shoes gone in 2 miles on dry ground? That's wild, I've never seen that before.

Man, I've been there. "Three shoes gone in 2 miles on dry ground" brought back bad memories. I ride a stretch of pavement that's got some rough chip seal, and I lost two tires on the same rim in like three weeks before I figured it out. What finally worked for me was switching to tires with a thicker casing, like a gravel tire or something with more puncture protection. Also, I started running a little higher pressure, not too high, but enough to keep the tire from squirming on those sharp edges. Have you checked if your rim tape is good, or if the bead seat has any burrs that could be cutting things from the inside?

Thicker casing tires are an absolute GAMECHANGER for that kind of pavement.
