Found a cheap trick for straight butt joints on ceiling repairs
I had this ceiling repair in a hallway that kept bowing out no matter how much I pre-filled. After four hours of sanding and frustration, I grabbed a straight 2x4 and clamped it across the joint while the mud dried. The screws through the board kept everything perfectly flat, and I only needed one finish coat. Saved me at least an hour of sanding on that 8 foot seam. Has anyone else tried something like this for stubborn joints?

Started doing the same with my scrap MDF boards and it works like a charm every time.

Isn't that always the way, finding hidden shortcuts in plain sight?

Works like a charm" reminds me I once tried gluing MDF with hot glue. Disaster.
