Unpopular opinion: My neighbor's DIY fence looks fine, but it's on my property line

My next door neighbor put up a nice looking wooden fence over the weekend, all by himself. I was happy for him until I looked at the old property pins and saw the posts are a good six inches onto my side. Now I have to figure out how to bring this up without starting a fight. Has anyone else had to talk to a neighbor about a project that crossed a line?

The survey thing makes sense but is six inches really worth the headache. That fence is already built and it looks fine. Unless you were planning to dig right there it probably does not change anything for you. Sometimes you just have to let the small stuff go.

Man... @leo658 is right about keeping it casual.

Did you get a recent survey to make sure those pins are accurate? When my neighbor built a shed over my line, I brought my survey copy and mentioned it casually like it was an easy mix-up. He appreciated the calm heads-up and we sorted it out the next week. Just lead with the facts and a friendly tone to avoid sounding accusing.

Keeping it casual stops things from blowing up.
