PSA: Overheard someone at a coworking space bragging about never backing up their laptop - scared me straight

Was grabbing coffee at WeWork last Tuesday and this guy next to me was telling his friend he's been a nomad for 3 years and never once backed up his files. Lol I almost choked on my latte. He said 'if it dies it dies' like it was some cool flex. I've been lazy about cloud backups myself but hearing that made me set up automatic syncing to Google Drive and an external SSD that night. Not worth losing client work or photos from the road. Anyone else got a horror story about losing data while traveling?

Actually I've been on the road for almost 5 years now and I sort of get where that guy is coming from. Not saying I agree with zero backups, but there's something to be said about not living in fear of your gear. I lost a hard drive in Vietnam in 2019 and honestly it was kind of freeing. I had a bunch of travel photos and some drafts for a book I was never going to finish anyway. Now I keep one external drive and back up maybe once a month when I remember. If my laptop got stolen tomorrow I'd be annoyed but I'd move on. All that stuff can be replaced or recreated. The real memories are in your head, not on a cloud server.

Man wait hold on, you said you LOST a hard drive in Vietnam? Like not stolen, just lost lost? I don't know how you just casually drop that like it's no big deal. My stomach would be in knots for a week if I misplaced a drive with all my stuff on it, even if it was mostly drafts I was never gonna finish. You've got some serious chill that I just don't have.
