Vent: The gallery upload that made me rage quit on my own art

I went to the new digital art showcase downtown last Saturday, the one at the old warehouse space on 5th. The pieces on the big screens were incredible, but the setup made me crazy. Half the monitors were running slideshows that changed every 8 seconds, so you never got a real chance to study the line work or brush strokes. Then there was this one artist who clearly spent days on a massive animation, and they stuck it on a tiny tablet in the corner facing a pillar. I asked the volunteer if they could move it, and she just shrugged and said the layout was decided by the curator. It got me thinking about how we showcase our own stuff online too, how easy it is to bury your best work under a bad preview or a cluttered profile page. Has anyone else seen a killer piece get ruined by the presentation, or is it just me who obsesses over the display as much as the art itself?

The gallery curator at our local art center did something similar last spring, put this huge gorgeous oil painting behind the coat rack by the door. Nobody could see it unless they were leaving. I read something about how museums used to light paintings with candles and move them around so people would actually spend time with them. These days it feels like whoever puts the show together sometimes never thinks about how people move through a space. Your thing about burying best work online hit close to home, I spent weeks on a piece and then posted it at a weird time of day with a blurry thumbnail. Nobody saw it and I deleted it out of frustration. Presentation really is half the battle, both in real life and on a screen.
