Rant: I paid $65 for a 'preservation patch' for MAG that does nothing but crash my PS3

Saw a listing on an old forum selling a MAG server revival patch for $65 last month, and the guy swore it would let me play again with 20 other people. I sent the money through PayPal on a Tuesday and got a download link three days later. Installed it on my fat PS3, and now my console freezes on the loading screen every single time, plus the whole save file got corrupted. Real fan fixes for this game are free on GitHub, so do not pay anybody for a mod, no matter how convincing their post looks. Did anyone here ever get scammed like this, and is there a working MAG save editor that won't brick my system?
