The career counselor who told me to stop 'doing what I love' was onto something

Back in 2018 I told my community college counselor I wanted to do woodworking full time and he basically laughed, said I should keep concrete as the paycheck and wood as the hobby. I was mad for like a month, but now I see it, the quote work pays for the good chisels and I don't hate waking up for it. Anyone else get advice that felt insulting but ended up being the right call?

and honestly that whole thing about not hating waking up for it is the part people don't get until theyre older, like the counselor wasnt saying give up on woodworking, they were saying let it stay fun and pressure free. i tried doing my hobby for money once and it turned into stressing about orders and deadlines and suddenly i didnt even wanna look at it on weekends, so now i just do it when i feel like it and its way better. the concrete job keeps the lights on and the wood stuff stays mine, not the customers. sometimes the boring advice is the one that actually respects you, even when it sounds like a buzzkill at the time.
