Hot take: you don't need a fancy bell to know when the weld is done, and my foreman finally admitted it
I weld pipe 50 hours a week for a living but what I really love is building little steel sculptures in my garage at night. For 3 years my foreman kept yelling at me to listen for the bell before pulling the trigger, but I noticed the bell lies on thin wall pipe. Last Thursday I ran 14 joints using just the puddle sound and the color of the arc, and only 1 failed the x-ray. My foreman walked by, looked at the film, and said 'huh, guess you can hear it better than the bell.' The day job taught me to trust my ears instead of a tool, and now my sculptures have cleaner welds than anything I made in class. Anyone else here learn a real skill at work that quietly made their hobby way better?
