I finally realized I was slicing onions wrong after 30 years

Last Sunday I was prepping dinner at my sister's place in Columbus and she watched me cut an onion in half from root to tip, then saw me hacking the ends off first. She just said, 'why are you wasting half the onion?' I had no idea the root holds everything together, so I always cut it off and ended up with slippery slices. I tried her way, leaving the root intact and slicing from the top down, and the pieces actually stayed stacked. Has anyone else had a basic kitchen skill suddenly click like that after decades? What did you think was normal that turned out to be completely backwards?
