Tried the penny trick on my squeaky porch hinge and it went dead silent for 3 weeks
So my back porch gate had this awful squeak that showed up every time the wind blew, and WD-40 only lasted a few days. Figured I had nothing to lose so I looked up that old trick where you rub a pencil lead on the hinge pin and gave it a shot. Rubbed a No. 2 pencil back and forth on the pin maybe 20 times until it looked gray and gritty, then swung the gate open and shut a bunch to work it in. Way quieter almost right away, and it stayed quiet for about 3 weeks before a tiny bit of squeak crept back. Learned that graphite hangs on way longer than oil in this humid Georgia air, since oil just attracts dust and gunks up. Anybody got a method that beats a pencil for keeping gate hinges quiet?
