My compost pile finally stopped smelling like a dumpster

For two months I kept adding kitchen scraps and grass clippings but it was this wet, rotting mess that attracted every fly in Austin. I read somewhere that it needed more browns, so I started throwing in shredded cardboard and dead leaves from my neighbor's yard. After about three weeks of turning it every other day, it actually started heating up and broke down into this dark, crumbly dirt. The smell went from gag-inducing to like fresh forest floor, which sounds dumb but I was genuinely proud. It took me 6 tries to get the moisture right, and now my tomato plants are going crazy off that stuff. Has anyone else dealt with a compost that just refused to cooperate at first?
