My old writing teacher told me to stop using prompts, and now I can't tell if she's right or just wrong for me
Last week I ran into my 10th grade creative writing teacher at a coffee shop in Dayton, and she told me she thinks writing prompts are a crutch that keeps people from finding their own voice. I've been using prompts almost daily for about 3 years now, and honestly they're the only reason I sit down and write at all. Half of me thinks she's stuck in her old workshop ways, but the other half wonders if I'm just hiding behind other people's ideas instead of coming up with my own. What do you all think, do prompts help you grow as a writer or do they keep you from digging into your own stuff?
