My old writing teacher said to kill my favorite sentence, and it actually made the whole scene work
We were grabbing coffee near her place in Boise last month and she told me the line I was proudest of was the one holding my story back. I cut it, rewrote the paragraph in 10 minutes, and suddenly the character sounded like a real person instead of me showing off. What's the one line you've been too attached to cut?
That bit about the character sounding like a real person instead of you showing off really hits. I've got a line I keep defending to myself because it's clever, but clever is exactly the problem in that spot. How did you know that one was the keeper to kill and not just a decent line having a bad day?
