A beta reader told me my last 3 stories all started with someone waking up, so I rewrote my whole prompt list
Last Tuesday my writing group in Tacoma read my draft and one guy, Marcus, said every story I brought for 2 rounds opened with a character waking up or staring out a window. I went back and checked and he was right, 7 out of 9 pieces did that. So now I keep a running list of 30 opening prompts that ban waking up, weather, and mirrors. My new rule is the first line has to have a person doing something with their hands. It's only been 3 weeks but the group says my stuff sounds way less sleepy. Does anyone else have a banned-words or banned-openings list for their prompts, and what's on it?
Seven out of nine opening with someone waking up is wild, did they at least have exciting dreams? My banned list is just "it was a dark and stormy night," mostly because I wrote that exact line for like a year straight.
