The referral network I ignored for 2 years finally paid off in one Tuesday

Our shop's been registered on that creative pros directory since 2021. I always thought it was just a bunch of people spamming their portfolios and no one actually looks at it. Then last Tuesday a guy from a startup in Denver emailed me out of nowhere. He found my profile through that network, said he liked a project I posted 14 months ago. We set up a call and now I'm doing a recurring retainer for their product launch. The whole thing came from a connection I never even followed up on. I've been telling myself for years that word of mouth was enough. Turns out being listed and having updated work samples mattered more than I thought. Has anyone else gotten a real client from just sitting on a directory listing? What's the longest time between posting and getting a hit? Trying to figure out if I should refresh my stuff more often or if this was just luck.
