That phone call from a former coworker changed how I handle referrals

Last Thursday, out of the blue, a guy I worked with 4 years ago at a studio in Austin called me. He passed my name to a startup that needed a designer and they hired me for a 12 hour project. It made me realize my network was basically dormant until someone else woke it up. How do you all keep those old contacts alive without being annoying about it?

Austin is a small enough town that I still ran into that same guy at HEB two years later, so dormant is sometimes just fine. Honestly, I keep in touch with maybe three people from every job, and the rest fall away, which saves me from any awkward small talk.
