The spatula flip that made me question 15 years of pancake mornings

I grew up watching my dad flip pancakes with this dramatic wrist snap and always copied it. Last month at my sister's place in Austin she just slid the spatula under and gently turned it, no snap at all. I asked why and she said the snap is how you fling batter onto the ceiling, which made me realize I'd been cleaning pancake splatter off my kitchen walls every Sunday for 15 years. Turns out the secret is a slow lift and a quick but low wrist turn, not a dramatic flick. I felt equal parts dumb and relieved because I thought everyone just dealt with sticky cabinets. Has anyone else had a cooking habit they picked up from a parent that was straight up nonsense?

Oh man, this hit home. My mom used to have me shake the pan to "test" if eggs were done, which just made scrambled rubber until I watched my roommate flip them once and never went back.
