Overheard a homeowner say they never notice the finish, only the cracks
I was grabbing coffee yesterday and heard a guy talking about his new patio. He said, 'I don't care about the fancy swirls, I just want it to not crack in a year.' It hit me that all the time we spend on perfect broomed lines or a slick trowel might not be what people remember. They remember if it holds up. I've been focusing way more on my subgrade prep and control joints since. What's one thing you do to make sure a pour lasts, not just looks good day one?

Yeah, that "holds up" part is what really matters in the end.

Ever notice how this applies to everything, not just concrete? We buy stuff for the finish but live with the flaws... a phone with a great camera that dies in a year, a car that looks cool but rattles. The shiny part gets the sale, but the solid, boring stuff underneath is what you actually deal with every day. That guy's patio comment just made it click for me. We're all just looking for things that don't crack under pressure.
