Lost comms at 60 feet in the Cooper River and my backup plan was a rock
We were doing a pipeline inspection near Charleston when my surface comms cut out completely, so I switched to line pulls every 30 seconds like we drilled. Turned out a crab had chewed through the cable jacket at the 40 foot mark and the tender only caught it because I missed a pull. Anyone else keep a slate and grease pencil handy for when the box dies, or is that just me being old school?
A crab chewing through your comm cable is the most Cooper River thing I have ever heard. Slate and grease pencil is not old school, it is just smart. Every diver I know who has been down long enough has had a box die at the worst time. The guys who laugh at the slate are the same ones panicking when their fancy setup takes a dump. You did the right thing switching to line pulls and your tender deserves a raise for catching that missed pull.
