Appreciation post: the old guy on the barge who watched me fumble with a lift bag for an hour

He finally leaned over and said, 'Kid, you're trying to lift a Buick with a party balloon.' I'd been trying to fill a 100-pound bag to move a 2-ton pump section in 30 feet of water. What's the dumbest basic thing you've been corrected on underwater?

Ever try to cut line with a butter knife?

Honestly that's how I ended up with a mangled piece of rope and a butter knife stuck in my deck. Took me twenty minutes just to saw through it, and the frayed ends were completely useless.

That butter knife story is a good lesson in using the right tool. A proper dive knife is designed to cut line cleanly and safely. A kitchen tool just makes a mess and risks a bad cut.
