My LCS guy flipped through my longbox and said 'you buy covers, not stories'
He was right, I had 47 variants of the same issue and could not tell him a single plot point, so now I only pull books where I can name the writer and what happened last arc, and honestly my pull list dropped from 30 titles to 9, anyone else had a shop owner call them out like that?
Oh man that would sting but also kind of be a wake up call. I read a thing a while back about a guy who did the same experiment, dropped like two thirds of his pulls, and said he actually enjoyed comics way more after. There's this comic shop owner on a podcast I listen to who says variants are basically designed to make you buy the same book over and over without reading it, which tracks. Nine titles you actually know inside out sounds way better than thirty you can't remember. That said I still grab a cool cover here and there, I'm just not fooling myself about it anymore.
