Passed 2,000 latte pours and still flubbed a leaf pattern

I track every pour I do at home on a little notebook, and last Tuesday I hit the 2,000 mark. That felt huge until I tried a rosetta on my wife's mug and it looked like a potato with legs. I've been doing this for about 14 months, mostly on a $80 pitcher from a big box store, so I thought I'd be better by now. Has anyone else hit a big number and then had a total off day that made you question your progress?
