Just realized my drip machine's hot plate is cooking my brew after 20 mins

I always figured the warming plate keeping my pot hot was a good thing, but after reading a tip from a guy at a roaster in Portland, I timed it and my second cup was bitter and flat by the 20 minute mark. Turns out that constant heat keeps cooking the grounds and scalds the flavor, so now I pour into a thermos right when the brew finishes. Anyone else ditch the hot plate, and did a thermal carafe really keep it tasting fresh for you?
