Question about copying code from a YouTube tutorial line by line versus actually understanding what a for loop does

Spent 3 hours last Tuesday copying a guy's to-do app code character by character and it worked, then tried to change one word from 'add' to 'delete' and broke the whole thing, so now I type every line out by hand and say it out loud like a weirdo, does anyone else talk to their code or is that just me?
