Overheard a kid say 'just copy the code from Stack Overflow' and it bugged me all day

I was at a coffee shop near Union Square last Tuesday and this teenager was helping his friend with a Python assignment. He literally said 'just copy the code from Stack Overflow, nobody cares how it works.' I get the appeal, I really do. I've grabbed snippets myself. But for a total beginner, that's like copying the answer key and never learning the steps. 6 months ago I did that with a sorting algorithm and then froze when the prompt changed a little. Took me 3 hours to fix something that should've taken 20 minutes. Do you guys copy paste more when starting out and regret it later, or did it actually help you pick things up faster? Curious what's worked for others.
