Vent: Just blew $80 on a 'precision' edge finder that's less accurate than a worn-out HSS drill bit.
I trusted the fancy packaging over my gut feeling and now it's sitting in the drawer, a constant reminder to check reviews from actual machinists before buying anything new for the shop.

My buddy bought one of those expensive digital edge finders last year, swore it was the best thing ever. Turns out the runout was so bad he was getting a five thou swing just from the battery weight. He went back to his old Starrett knockoff that cost twenty bucks and has worked for a decade. That fancy packaging gets everyone once in a while.

Remember reading about those digital ones having thermal drift issues too? Some guy on a machining forum said his readings would wander almost a tenth just from his hand warming up the body. Makes you wonder if the extra tech just adds more things that can go wrong. A simple mechanical tool either works or it doesn't.

Five thou swing from a battery is just crazy to think about. It really shows how a simple design flaw can wreck a high tech tool. I get the appeal of a digital readout, but if the basics aren't right it's just a fancy paperweight. Your buddy's story is a perfect reminder that proven and simple often wins. What was the brand of that digital finder he bought?

That "fancy packaging gets everyone" line is so true, I read a whole forum thread about people falling for the shiny new tool trap.
