Picked the $60 ebike kit over the $1,200 commuter, still riding 5 months later

I had to choose between bolting a cheap conversion kit onto my old 10-speed or dropping real money on a proper ebike last spring in Denver. The kit took 4 hours to install and the battery rattles loose on potholes, but it gets me to work for 22 cents of electricity instead of the $4 bus fare. Has anyone else gone the budget conversion route and ended up fixing more than they saved?

Rode mine through a hailstorm last July and the controller shorted out, ended up costing more than a bus pass.
