Just realized my backyard compost bin vs the city pickup, which one actually helps more?
I used to toss everything green into a $40 tumbler and wait months for crumbly dirt, but last spring I switched to the municipal curbside program after the bin froze solid in January, and now I'm wondering if my small-scale effort was ever worth it or if the pros scaling up really does cut emissions faster, anyone else ditch their own pile for the city route?

The city route is honestly a game changer. I kept my own bin for years and felt so proud of it, but after one winter of trying to chip frozen scraps out with a screwdriver, I gave up and went full municipal. The sheer volume they process means the pile actually heats up and breaks down properly, which my little bin never did. Plus, they can handle stuff like meat and bones that I was always scared to toss in my backyard. Your small effort was still better than trashing it, but the pros just have the scale to make a real dent. Are you noticing a big difference in how much you're not throwing away now?
