My upholstery guy in Cleveland told me to stop sanding my dash pad, and he was right
I've been working on a 1965 Mustang coupe for about 14 months now and I was stuck on the dash pad for 3 weeks. I kept hitting it with 220 grit, then 400, trying to smooth out these little cracks before dyeing it, and it just kept looking worse. My upholstery guy Ray, who has been doing this for 32 years, looked at it for maybe 10 seconds and said "you're sanding the grain right off, just fill the cracks and dye over it." I felt pretty dumb because he was totally right, the sanding was making the texture uneven and no dye was going to hide that. I got some flexible filler, let it sit 24 hours, hit it with SEM Landau Black, and it looks better than I expected for a $40 fix. Has anyone else had a trim guy call out a step you were sure was right?
