Vent: my 16 foot ladder's fly section seized up on a two story job in Dayton last Tuesday
Halfway up the second story the fly section just quit sliding, so I'm stuck on a rung like an idiot while the homeowner watches from her kitchen window. Turned out years of creosote dust and rain had gummed up the rope and pulley something awful, and no amount of yanking would free it. I ended up climbing down, pulling the whole ladder apart in her driveway, and scraping the channels clean with a wire brush and a rag soaked in WD-40. Got the flue done an hour late and only charged her half, since she got a free show out of it. Any of you still running old wooden extension ladders, or did you all switch to fiberglass years back like my old boss kept telling me to?
Sounds like you gave that homeowner a full episode of ladder rescue theater for free, which is more than most folks get on a Tuesday. Wood ladders are like old trucks, great until they quit on you at the worst possible spot. In my experience fiberglass is worth the money just so you're not yanking on a rope in someone's driveway.
