Serious question, an old sweep in Tulsa told me to stop oiling my brushes after every job
He said the oil attracts grit that wears down the bristles from the inside, and now I'm second guessing 8 years of dunking them after every chimney, so do any of you oil yours or is that just an old habit nobody needed?
I ran into the same thing about five years back when a guy I trust told me to quit soaking mine in oil every night. He said the bristles get soft and start grabbing soot instead of letting it fall off. I switched to just brushing them out dry after each job and giving them a quick wash maybe once a week with mild soap. My brushes have lasted way longer since then and they clean better too. That old oil ritual was just something I picked up from guys who learned it from other guys. Try going without it for a month and see how your bristles hold up.
