My dad told me to never buy a used car from a private seller

Honestly, I thought he was just being overly cautious, but I got burned on a 2012 Civic last month. The seller swore the transmission was fine, but it started slipping on the drive home from Phoenix. Anyone else have a story about ignoring advice you should've taken?

Private sellers ALWAYS downplay problems. My buddy bought a truck that "just needed a tune up" and the engine blew two weeks later. Trust your gut AND a mechanic.

Yeah @the_thea nailed it, even good sellers miss stuff a mechanic would catch.

Man that story about the truck is way too real. I had a guy tell me his car just had a "small oil leak" once. Small meant it was basically marking its territory everywhere it parked. You're right, you gotta hear that little voice in your head saying something's off. Paying a mechanic for an hour of their time has saved me from so many bad deals.
