Showerthought: an old guy at the lumber yard said 'measure twice, cut once' is only half the saying
I was picking up some 2x4s at the yard in Tulsa last week and this older guy next to me started talking about how the full saying used to be 'measure twice, cut once, cuss once, go back for more.' He laughed and said most guys only remember the first part because that's the part that makes you feel smart. I tried it on a set of stair stringers over the weekend and honestly the cussing part happened anyway. Anyone else ever hear a different version of that saying from an old timer?
My grandpa ran a cabinet shop in Bixby for 40 years and he would've called that guy full of it. He always said "measure twice, cut once" and that was it, period. His whole thing was that adding the cussing and going back part just gives guys an excuse to be sloppy, like oh well, everybody messes up, guess I will too. I watched him hang 30 cabinets in a row without one miscut because he measured off the actual space every single time instead of trusting his first number. Blaming the saying for bad cuts is like blaming a level for a crooked wall. The old timer at your yard probably just liked hearing himself talk.
