Bought a $600 laser level, used my old string line and got the same result

Last month I dropped 600 on a fancy green beam self leveling unit because I thought my work would get faster. Spent a whole day reading the manual, charging batteries, figuring out the mount. Then I had to do a simple cabinet run in a kitchen in Tacoma. Grabbed my old nylon string and a 4 foot level, had it all marked out in 20 minutes. The laser is still in the box. I bet I'll use it twice a year. Has anyone else bought expensive gear that just sits there while the cheap stuff does the job?

Ditched the fancy transit level I bought for laying out footings and grabbed a chalk line and a speed square instead. The laser needed recalibrating every time I bumped it, the chalk line never lied. It’s just faster to snap a line and go, and I don’t have to babysit batteries. I keep the laser for the rare long run, but the cheap stuff gets used every single day.
