Rant: I laughed at my buddy's $8 headlamp until it outlasted my fancy one in Yosemite
My friend pulled out this tiny thing from a gas station bin in Fresno and I gave him grief for 2 days straight on our trip last spring. On night 3 near Tuolumne, my $60 light died in the cold while his cheap one kept burning for 3 more nights on the same batteries. I had to borrow it to find the bear box and eat my words in the dark. Now I keep a spare in my pack and I'm not even mad about it. What's the cheapest piece of gear that ever bailed you out?
Ha! Same thing happened to me with a $5 poncho from a gas station in Bishop that held up way better than my fancy rain jacket. Sometimes cheap and simple just WORKS when the weather gets nasty.
