I bought a $180 ultrasonic cleaner for shutter assemblies and it made things worse
Everyone on here keeps telling new guys to get an ultrasonic for cleaning shutters and lens groups. So I grabbed a cheap 2 liter unit off Amazon and dropped a Canon AE-1 shutter assembly in there with some generic solution for 6 minutes. When I pulled it out, the shutter curtain looked clean, but the timing was off by nearly 40 percent on my tester and two blades were sticking. Turns out the cavitation had flushed out the factory lube from the pivot points and I could not get it working right no matter how much I relubed it. I ended up swapping the whole assembly and eating the cost. Now I just use naptha, a soft brush, and a whole lot of patience. Has anyone here actually had luck with ultrasonic on leaf shutters or is it always a gamble?
