A shop in Grand Rapids went from tracing plywood with a pencil to a $22,000 CNC in 6 years
Stopped by my old boss's place on Division Ave in Grand Rapids and he's got a CNC router humming in the corner now. Same guy who used to make me trace every cabinet side by hand with a dull pencil back in 2018. He says the drawer boxes come out plus or minus a hair every time, but he still checks them with a tape. Anyone else see a small shop make that kind of jump, or is it just Grand Rapids getting fancy?
That is wild but also kinda sweet honestly. My uncle ran a small cabinet shop out in Holland and he held onto his old hand tools forever, even after he got a table saw that could do everything faster. He still checked every cut with the same wooden ruler he'd had since the 80s. There's something about watching someone who came up the hard way finally get a machine that makes their life easier. Most of these guys don't jump to fancy stuff for the heck of it, they do it cause their hands and back are paying the price after 20 years. My uncle's knuckles still swell up when it rains, so I get why your old boss finally caved.
